Hotel Colonial, since 1971

Things to do in Ouro Preto, starting from the historic centre

Ouro Preto has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 and keeps one of Brazil’s most important Baroque ensembles. Staying in the historic centre, you can do much of your sightseeing on foot.

Tiradentes Square

It is the heart of the town, 40 m from the hotel. Around it are the Inconfidência Museum, which tells the story of the Inconfidência Mineira, and the Museum of Science and Technique of the School of Mines.

Baroque churches

The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi bears the mark of Aleijadinho and Mestre Athayde. The Mother Church of Our Lady of Pilar impresses with its gilded altars and carvings. There is also the Church of Our Lady of Carmel and many more along the slopes.

Mines and gold history

The Chico Rei Mine lets you go inside and learn how gold was mined in Ouro Preto. The Casa dos Contos shows the economic life of the colonial period.

Nearby

A few kilometres away is Mariana, a neighbouring town with churches, mansions and the Passagem Mine.

Walking the town

The best outing is to stroll without hurry along stone streets, slopes, fountains and viewpoints. Wear comfortable shoes.

Opening hours, prices and days open change over time: please check with each place before you go.
